There’s Still Over a Week to Celebrate Pride Month! What Are You Doing?

Pride Month is in full swing, and there’s still over a week left to embrace it! So, what’s your plan? Why am I so excited to know? Well, as we revel in the festivities of this significant month, having an engaging plan can make all the difference. It’s not just about passive support; it’s about actively participating and immersing ourselves in Pride Month’s enriching experiences and positioning ourselves to learn something we did not know.

Let me share an incredible event I attended recently—the powerful panel presented by our incredible iPride ERG, featuring inspiring leaders from Illumina. Listening to their stories and insights was an eye-opening experience that reinforced the notion that engaging in Pride Month events goes beyond mere performance. It’s about meaningfully deepening our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

One particular message resonated deeply with me: Young professionals yearn to see senior professionals embracing their true selves, and being open and available to share their experiences. It’s no surprise, really, as we all know that representation matters. But hearing directly from those who need it serves as a powerful reminder of the real impact it can have. When young professionals don’t see senior leaders being authentic, they start questioning whether they too should hide their true selves. This is a heartfelt plea to all the senior leaders out there: Never underestimate the significance of your presence and the difference it can make.

During the panel, a professional shared a profoundly touching story. He discovered that his own courage to be out inspired one of his mentors to take the same step. This is a vital message for young professionals to grasp: Your courage and authenticity have a profound impact, even if it goes unnoticed or unexpressed. People see you, appreciate you, and find strength in your bravery, even when they may not vocalize it.

Another insight, though not new, struck me once again: Coming out is always a carefully calculated decision. LGBTQ+ individuals constantly evaluate the safety and acceptance they will encounter in different environments. Safety and acceptance can never be taken for granted. So, take a moment to let that sink in, especially if you find yourself in a place of privilege. When was the last time you had to question your safety and acceptance? This is a regular occurrence for some, and they may even have to choose where to live or vacation based on these factors.

Lastly, I want to stress the importance of the signs the LGBTQ+ community constantly reads. It’s incredible how something as simple as a rainbow flag in a company’s window can signal safety and acceptance. Conversely, when a company’s external expression appears welcoming, but internally isn’t, it can be incredibly disorienting and hurtful. This is a direct message to all DEI leaders, marketers, and individuals who shape a company’s culture and expression: What you say and how you say it matters. Different communities are always watching, so let’s ensure we never miss an opportunity to send the right signs.

As I reflect on these powerful insights, it becomes clear that our understanding evolves as we progress through our careers. Sometimes, we may underestimate our own value because our lingo isn’t as “hip” as it used to be. But what truly matters is the wisdom we gain along the way—the kind that helps us make informed decisions and guide others, transcending passing trends. Fashion styles may come and go, but the fundamental needs of every human remain unchanged: to be accepted and celebrated for our unique ways of working and expressing ourselves. And being part of the effort to ensure this for others means being genuinely human.

So, let’s continue celebrating Pride Month with all the love, joy, and pride it deserves! Remember, there’s still over a week left to immerse ourselves in this vibrant celebration. Embrace and honor our diversity not just during this month, but throughout the entire year. After all, each day is an opportunity to cherish and celebrate our unique selves!
